Dalian is northeastern China's premier city, and serves as the commercial hub for the region. It is the only port city in Liaoning province, and is linked to the major rail and road networks of the entire northeastern market and, via shipping lines, to major global ports. It is the gateway to the whole vast hinterland which stretches north to the Russian border, northwest to Mongolia, and east to Korea. Three provinces and one Autonomous Region are included in this zone-Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia-with a combined population of over 125 million. This enormous market makes up 13% of China's total GDP, and includes many of China's industrial giants. Enterprise reforms are modernizing the regional economy, providing new dynamism to industry and commerce.
