Dalian creates innovative base for frontier sciences
BY 2003-08-12 09:13:58
The construction of the Dalian DD Port, a high-tech park specifically launched for frontier sciences such as digital and DNA technologies in Northeast China's port city of Dalian, is maintaining a rapid growth momentum.

Since its establishment in March, a total of 600 million yuan (US$72 million) has been invested in the construction of the park.

The five-square-kilometre first-stage project has been completed to date, and about 3 million square metres of land are ready to be leased.

A batch of parks inside the DD port, including the incubation park, optical communication park, digital manufacturing park and biological pharmaceuticals park, have been put into operation.

At present, more than 100 enterprises funded by domestic and overseas investors have been established in the port.

These enterprises include the Dalian Optical Communication Co Ltd, the Dalian Display Technology Centre, Zhen'ao Biology, Hongyu Pharmaceuticals and Tianwei Pharmaceuticals.

While improving the infrastructure facilities in the first stage, the DD port plans to develop about another 1 square kilometre of land this year.

A biological technology incubation centre and a technology testing platform with international standards will also be constructed to further update the investment environment.

Since digital technology and life sciences have become major forces driving global industrial upgrades, Dalian has become the first city in China to set up the DD port as a base to develop technologies in these fields.

A part of the Dalian High-tech Development Zone, the port is located in the northern part of Dalian.

Scheduled to cover a land area of 20 square kilometres, it is only 5 kilometres to the Dayaowan Port and 28 kilometres to the Zhoushuizi International Airport.

The DD port and its adjacent Jinshitan Tourist Resort, Dalian Economic and Technological Development Zone and Dalian Bonded Area, have formed an industrial corridor with complementary industries.

To build the port into a world-class base for high-tech development, the Dalian city government has designed a high-standard plan, placing equal emphasis on industrial development and environmental protection, aims to make the port a community suitable for both business development and human inhabitation.

In addition, the local authorities have also pledged a commitment to improve administration and services, and to offer incentives in taxation and land transfers to investors.
