China Super League leaders Dalian Shide were sent crashing out in the first round of the CSL Cup as an injury time goal by Jiang Ning sent Qingdao Zhongneng through to the quarter-finals on the away goals rule.
Dalian took a 1-0 lead into the match at the People’s Stadium after victory in Qingdao the week before and looked to have booked their spot in the next round after goals by Yan Song and Ji Mingyi in the first 12 minutes extended their aggregate advantage to 3-0.
The visitors battled back though with Qu Bo pulling a goal back on 20 minutes before second half strikes by Sun Jian and Liu Jian leveled the aggregate score.
Zou Jie put Dalian ahead once again with a 75th minute strike to make it 3-3 on the night but Jiang’s late heroics sent Qingdao through to a last eight clash with Wuhan Huanghelou next month.
Wuhan, who are currently second in the Super League, advanced after winning a penalty shootout with Tianjin Teda. Lu Yan’s 79th minute goal put Tianjin back into the tie, leveling the aggregate score at 1-1, but Wuhan prevailed 6-5 in the shootout.
Beijing Hyundai also needed away goals to eliminate Inter Shanghai. The capital side lost the second leg 2-1 but Lu Jiang’s early away goal proved decisive as Beijing progressed to a meeting with cup holders Shandong Luneng.
Shandong were given a bye to the quarter-finals along with 2004 CSL Cup runners-up Shenzhen Jianlibao.
In other matches, Liaoning held Shenyang Ginde to a goalless draw to go through 3-1 on aggregate, Shanghai Shenhua defeated Shanghai Zobon 3-1 to complete a 7-2 destruction of their local rivals, and Chongqing Qiche drew 3-3 with Sichuan Guancheng for an 8-4 victory.
The first leg of the quarter-finals will be played on Saturday, June 5 with the return matches on June 12.
